MIAMI, Florida, July 2, 2009.- Puerto Rico
defeated Argentina 25-18, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19,
claiming a semi final round ticket to play
Friday afternoon against Dominican Republic in
the Eighth Women’s Pan American Cup at
University of Miami’s BankUnited Center.
Aurea Cruz recorded a match-high 24 points for
Puerto Rico while Yarimar Rosa and Sarai Alvarez
added 18 and 17 respectively.
Georgina Pinedo and Leticia Boscacci were the
best Argentinean scorers producing 13 and 12
points.
The serves of the Puerto Ricans caused major
troubles to the opponent’s reception as they
scored 9 service aces to only two by the
Argentineans. Cruz led that category with four
winning serves.
In the matches for the 5-8 positions, Canada
plays Peru and Argentina goes against Costa
Rica. USA plays Brazil in the other semi final.
“We are happy but not satisfied because we made
a lot of mistakes and need to work on that. I
really expected a better match from both teams,”
said Carlos Cardona, the coach of Puerto Rico.
“The quick pace established by Puerto Rico made
it difficult for us to block and to defense,”
said Georgina Klug, the captain of Argentina.
Regarding tomorrow’s match against Dominican
Republic, Cardona stated:
“Dominican Republic is a more potent and
stronger team with more experience. We need to
minimize our errors but also need to be
aggressive.”
